Bounced back

A new report, Landing in Dover, by Adrian Matthews for the Children’s Commissioner for England (January 2012) reveals the existence of a so called ‘gentleman’s agreement’ operating at the south coast ports between UKBA and its French counterpart whereby an unaccompanied child who did not make an immediate asylum claim would be returned to France within 24 hours of arrival in the UK. For the Children’s Commisisoner: ‘The practice of returning children from the border in this manner conflicts with the duty to safeguard children and promote their welfare’.
